Nanny in Stockholm: what it costs and how it works

A nanny in Stockholm costs from 165 kr an hour with Happy Nanny after RUT (the Swedish tax deduction for household services, taken off the invoice directly), and is the same person every time. Here is what the word means, how it works from the first call to the first shift, and what you should ask before you decide.

More and more Stockholm families are looking for a nanny rather than a babysitter. Often they are families with two careers, sometimes families who have moved here from a country where the word is the usual one, sometimes simply parents who want something more than a teenager sitting in on a Friday night. Whichever it is, they mean the same thing: an adult who comes regularly, knows the children and is part of everyday life. That is exactly what we do.

What we are not: an agency that just matches you up. We do not hand over a phone number and charge for it. The nanny is employed by us, Aleksandra has met and interviewed her, and we are the ones responsible if something does not work.

How it works

  1. You get in touch. Through the booking form or by phone. Tell us about the children, which days and times you need help, where you live and whether you want the nanny to speak a particular language.
  2. Aleksandra calls. She asks a few questions about the children, the times and languages, and suggests a nanny who suits you. It costs nothing and you commit to nothing.
  3. The first meeting. The nanny comes to your home for about 30 minutes, meets the children, and you get to ask every question you want.
  4. You decide. If it feels right, we book the first shift. If it does not feel right, we suggest someone else.
  5. The first shift. Aleksandra gets in touch afterwards and asks how it went. From then on it is the same nanny who comes, week after week.

What it costs, with no hidden fees

From 165 kr an hour after the RUT deduction, which we take off the invoice directly. Occasional bookings cost 199 kr an hour after RUT, full time from 165 kr, and in between the price depends on how many hours a week you book. One and two children cost the same, from the third child there is an extra 20 kr an hour. No start-up fees, no monthly fees, no binding twelve-month contract. Pick-up from förskola (municipal preschool, from age one) is included in the hourly rate. Questions you should ask, us or anyone else

  • Is the nanny employed by you or just referred?
  • Do we get the same person every time, and what happens if she is ill?
  • Have you met her yourselves, and who has checked the references?
  • What does it cost after RUT, and what is included?
  • Can we meet her before we decide?
  • Which languages does she speak, and can we choose?

We have written a longer guide on How to choose a nanny agency, with seven questions that separate a company that takes responsibility from one that just hands over a name.

A nanny who speaks English, Spanish, Arabic or Bulgarian

Many people searching for a nanny in Stockholm do so because they speak English at home. Our nannies speak Swedish, English, Bulgarian, Spanish and Arabic, and you choose which language applies with the children. For a family that has moved here, that can be the difference between a nanny who works and one who makes everyday life harder. We also have a page on babysitters in Stockholm for anyone who wants the short version.

Where in Stockholm

We work across the whole Stockholm area, with most families in the western and northern parts: Järfälla, Sollentuna, Solna, Bromma, Täby, Danderyd and the inner city. See all the areas we work in.

How we do it with our families

The most common arrangement is two or three afternoons a week. The nanny picks up from förskola, walks home via the playground, makes a snack and stays until you get home. After a few weeks she knows which swing is your child's, which friend usually comes home with them, and that a banana in the pocket is needed at pick-up. That is the difference between a nanny and a babysitter: not the word, but the fact that it is the same person.

What is the difference between a nanny and a babysitter?

In Sweden the words are used interchangeably. Nanny usually means a person who comes regularly, often the same days every week, and who is part of everyday life. Babysitter can mean the same thing, but is also used for a single evening. What matters is not the word but whether it is the same person every time.

What does a nanny cost in Stockholm?

With us, from 165 kr an hour after the RUT deduction. The price depends on how many hours you book: the more hours, the lower the hourly rate. One and two children cost the same, from the third child there is an extra 20 kr an hour.

Can we get a nanny who speaks English?

Yes. Our nannies speak Swedish, English, Bulgarian, Spanish and Arabic, and you choose which language she speaks with the children. It is common among families where one of the languages at home is English.

How quickly can a nanny start?
